In the first phase, Tan Cang-Sa Dec port cost more than VND40 billion for development, not including a group of 38 barges with total tonnage of up to 3,000 TEUs.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Nguyen Hoang Ton, vice chairman of Dong Thap Province’s People’s Committee, said that the presence of this container port will pave the way for local exporters to boost their export value thanks to cost-effective sea freight rate.
The province produces 2.5 million tons of rice and 320,000 tons of seafood every year. However, existing river ports cannot transport cargo in containers, forcing local exporters to shift their stocks to other ports. That is why transport fees are added on top of time-consuming procedures, Ton added.
Equipped with a 70 meter-long wharf, Tan Cang-Sa Dec port can handle vessels of 3,000 DWT. The total ground area of the port is over 2.7 hectares including 7,200 square meters of warehouse and one hectare of container yard, said Le Hoang Linh, chairman of Tan Cang No.2 Shipping Line J.S Co.
From the East Sea, it takes about 201km via the Tien River and 220km via the Hau River to reach the port, Linh added.
Tan Cang No.2 Shipping Line J.S Co, the managing unit of Tan Cang-Sa Dec port, is believed to hold a 65% share of sea transportation in the Mekong Delta region.
